Hydrodynamics evaluation of an internal-loop airlift reactor with Newtonian and shear-thinning fluids: Experimentation vs CFD simulation

The hydrodynamics of an internal-loop airlift reactor was numerically and experimentally characterized. gas holdup, liquid velocity, shear rate, flow pattern volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (kLa) were evaluated as a function the air velocity medium rheology. Tap water CMC solutions used Newtonian non-Newtonian fluids, respectively. standard  model employed for modeling turbulence, unsteady three-dimensional simulations with Euler–Euler performed. Gas kLa measurements performed validating simulations. An increase in bubble coalescence decrease observed solutions. presence recirculation loops inside riser is reported, which not tap water. higher concentration, larger region seems to be. Results show that play substantial role reactor’s hydrodynamic performance, it turns out holdup increases increasing concentration.
